Lars Sture

 BIOGRAPHY

Lars Sture is the director of Kunstnerforbundet.

Kunstnerforbundet is an artist-owned, non-profit art institution with an extensive program within the contemporary visual arts in Norway. Kunstnerforbundet was established in 1910 and is one of Scandinavia’s oldest artist-owned galleries. The gallery is organized as an idealistic limited company. 150 contemporary artists are currently associated with the gallery as shareholders. Anyone can apply for an exhibition space, and in recent years Kunstnerforbundet receives 800 applications annually. 30,000+ visitors participate annually in the institution’s program, covering 25 exhibitions, talks, seminars and workshops. With its more than 100-year history as an important platform for art, artists, and the artists’ economies, Kunstnerforbundet continues to be one of Norway’s most significant art institutions in the dissemination of the visual art field’s perspectives within public debate.

Sture previously held the position as curator at Norwegian Crafts being responsible for the organisation’s theory development projects and international exhibition program. As a curator Sture has been responsible for exhibitions and projects for institutions, museums and galleries both in Norway and abroad. Sture has written texts and essays on contemporary visual arts and exhibition making, and he has lectured on the subject at seminars and biennials worldwide. Sture was part of the team establishing a master's degree in jewellery at Central St. Martins School of Art / University of the Arts, London, and later he became the program’s first option leader.

Sture is on the board of The Norwegian Association of Curators. He has been on the board for the Arts Festival Oslo Open, as well as the Sogn og Fjordane Kunstmuseum. Between 2016 and 2020 he was a member of Arts Council Norway’s expert panel for Visual Arts.

Sture has his education from Bergen National Academy of the Arts (Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design at the Bergen University) in Creative Curatorial Practice, MA KhiO Oslo National Academy of the Arts and HND Higher National Diploma from Epsom School of Art, University of the Creative Arts (UK).
